Ways To Stay Connected To Your Team As You Work From HomeAs employees across the country settle into the new normal of conducting business from home, there’s more to get used to than spotty internet connections, different office setups and new co-workers, like spouses, roommates, kids and pets. For people who are used to working on a team, working from home can feel lonely and isolating. That loss of human connection and camaraderie can have a negative impact on your motivation, productivity and morale. It can even affect your emotional health.
So how are our partners combating these issues and finding ways to stay connected to their team members from a distance? Brad Lawson and Fernando Escaffi, co-founders and managing brokers of PrimeLine Capital, took some time out of their day to answer our questions on the impact working from home has had on their company, the importance of working together and how they’re finding ways to stay connected to their team.
QLMS: Why do you think it is important to stay connected to your team while you work from home during these challenging times?
PrimeLine Capital: This is really a two-part answer. First, we attribute our team culture as the #1 reason we have been able to have the level of success that we’ve had over the past year. Working together as a team enables all facets of the company to work in sync and with confidence that everyone is doing their work at a high level. It sets the tone with the client from the beginning and they feel it. Clients can feel the aura of an organization from the moment they speak to the first representative. When the team is working toward the same end goal, everything is in sync from start to finish. So, if we lose that team mentality, we lose the X-factor that has been the difference-maker in our organization. Staying connected enables us to keep that vibe in the PrimeLine team.
[Second], this is one of the wildest mortgage markets we have ever experienced. There is so much going on, so many moving parts, so many new loans, and our team is the same size it was with half that volume. We must all be connected and on the same page or the system could fall apart. Maintaining communication and working together is crucial to keep an awesome client and employee experience.
QLMS: What has been the hardest part about working remotely, away from your team and clients?
PrimeLine Capital: It has easily been missing that automatic camaraderie that we have just being around each other. When we’re in the office and it’s high energy and everyone is working hard, it lifts each team member up. We have team meetings, individual communication and group text/email threads now, but it’s hard to replicate the vibes when we’re all working hard together [in person].
QLMS: What measures have you taken to stay connected to your team and clients?
PrimeLine Capital: We’re consistently trying to use group threads via email and text and having individual check-ins with team members. With the remote setup being so new, we are implementing video team meetings using Microsoft Teams, so we can all still keep face-to-face communication.
QLMS: What positives have you seen from implementing these measures?
PrimeLine Capital: Resiliency. The resiliency of the team to change their entire work environment and not skip a single beat is incredible. As humans, most of us are creatures of routine and are opposed to change. Sometimes, the news and negative information about the current status of the economy and health of the U.S. can be a lot to weigh on anyone. Our team has bonded together, decided to focus on the positives and have not skipped a beat even in the face of tremendous uncertainty.
QLMS: Can you recommend any tools to help teams stay connected during this time?
PrimeLine Capital: Use your phone or video chat. Don’t rely on text and email. Let your team hear your voice. Don’t let your message be lost. Let them hear the way you are communicating. And give recognition. Say thank you as many times as humanly possible. Approach each conversation with gratitude that your team is working through a difficult situation the way they are.
QLMS: Any other tips for partners who are working from home?
PrimeLine Capital: Don’t watch or read [too much] news! Get [only] the news you need. The rest will fill you with uncertainty, negativity and doubt. Get up at the same time and get dressed like you would in the office. Put in 10 times the effort you would normally. Eat healthy and find a way to exercise. When you’re in the office, everyone around you watches the way you operate and you lead by example. It’s what you do when no one is watching that defines you.
